Norm applied for an early discharge from the military to go back to Montana State College in the fall of 1956. He left South Korea on Christmas Day, arriving in San Francisco on December 31, 1956. Norm was discharged from the Army on January 3, 1957. He flew back to Montana via Great Falls and was re-enrolled at Montana State in Bozeman on January 5.

Norm returned to Montana State College highly motivated and better prepared than he had been prior to his time in the Army. The GI Bill provide $121 per month, which allowed Norm the financial relief he needed to focus on his studies. After completing his prerequisites, Norm delved into his upper division coursework. He put in as many hours of studying as he could, gradually raising his grades to As and Bs.
