On February 24, 2016, AAON broke ground on a new engineering, research and development laboratory at its manufacturing headquarters in Tulsa. The three-story, 134,000-square-foot facility, called the Norm Asbjornson Innovation Center, was completed in 2018.

The Innovation Center consists of five psychrometric chambers that function as both an acoustical and performance measuring laboratory. The facility is the only laboratory in the world capable of measuring supply, return and ambient sound levels under actual load conditions.

The performance lab is able to assess the efficiency by which energy in converted into heating, cooling or air movement. The facility can simulate environmental conditions from minus 20 degrees to 140 degrees, up to eight inches of rain per hour, two inches of snow per hour and up to 50 mph wind testing. An observation area allows customers the opportunity to view product testing.

The Innovation Center allows AAON to meet and maintain AHRI (Air-Conditioning Heating and Refrigeration Institute) and DOE (Department of Energy) certification. Norm believes the facility will allow AAON to solidify its position as the technological leader in the manufacturing of HVAC equipment.
