Norm was enrolled at Montana State College during the construction of Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. The Fieldhouse was envisioned by MSC President Roland Renne and architect Oswald "Ozzie" Berg Jr. It was named for John "Brick" Breeden, who played guard for the Golden Bobcats during their 1928-29 national championship season. Breeden would later go on to coach the team.

When the Fieldhouse opened to the public in 1957, it was the largest clear-span wooden structure in the world. In 1960, Brick Breeden Fieldhouse drew the national spotlight when it hosted the National Boxing Association middleweight title fight between Joey Giardello and Gene Fullmer. The bout was the first title fight in Montana since the 1923 heavyweight duel between Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons, which bankrupted the town of Shelby in 1923.
