On November 17, 2017 the Montana Board of Regents voted unanimously to rename Montana State University's College of Engineering for Norm Asbjornson. The naming commemorated Norm's $50 million donation for the construction of a new engineering college, his volunteer efforts on behalf of MSU and for his ongoing support of the university.

A naming dedication for the Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering was held on February 1, 2018 in the Strand Union Building on campus. “Norm’s life story is a great example of the power of education to transform lives,” Brett Gunnink, dean of the Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering, said at the dedication.

MSU President Waded Cruzado recounted Norm's upbringing in Winifred and his path to success, calling him a "devoted friend to MSU." The ceremony marked the beginning of the Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering's featured month within the year of events celebrating MSU's 125th anniversary.
