 Proposed Solution:

• Single 16 bit microcontroller

  • Familiarity with HCS12

  • Easy availability

  • Relatively inexpensive

• Rechargeable NiCad battery supply

  • Less temperature dependent than Li-ion

  • Larger than Li-ion, but the existing clock housing has a holder for a NiCad pack

• Wireless remote control interface

  • Easy to use

  • Improved range over old model without a long cable

  • Rugged case

• Parallel output from microcontroller

  • Easier to implement than serial output

  • Plenty of I/O available

• Latched drivers

  • Split time implementation easier (simply disable the ouput enable)

  • Smaller overall power supply needed since both drivers and digits will be powered
