College-wide Program Requirements
The College of Engineering (COE) offers a Ph.D. in Engineering with options that include Industrial Engineering, which is administered by the Industrial and Management Engineering (I&ME) graduate program. The COE has general program requirements that apply to all students who pursue a Ph.D. in Engineering, regardless of which option they choose.
Program-specific Degree Requirements for IE Students
Ph.D. candidates must accumulate 60 total credit hours beyond the bachelor’s degree including the following:
- ENGR 600
- ENGR 610
- 3 credits of advanced math
- 3 credits numerical methods
- 24 credits of other graded courses
- 18 dissertation credits
Ph.D. candidates under the IE Option must take a minimum of 30 credits of 500-level courses (in addition to ENGR 610 and ENGR 611), of which at least 18 credits must be EIND courses, excluding thesis and project credits. Students must take at least two courses from each of the two emphasis areas: (http://www.coe.montana.edu/ie/gradprog/default.htm): Human Factors and Service Engineering. Double counting is not allowed; any course can be applied to only one emphasis area. Courses selected to meet the emphasis area requirement can also be used to meet the advanced math and numerical methods. EIND 554 meets the advanced math requirement, while EIND 509 and EIND 548 meet the numerical methods requirement, although other courses may qualify pending approval in writing from the I&ME Graduate Studies Committee.
Candidates can meet the above requirements using up to 24 course credits from a prior Master’s degree, but excluding independent study, project, thesis, or dissertation credits. The student’s graduate committee will determine course equivalency as needed, and document such in the student’s file.
