MSU Alums Honored at the Biennial Construction Industry Recognition Dinner

Several MSU Civil Engineering alumni were among those honored at the Fifth Biennial Construction Industry Recognition Dinner hosted by MSU's Department of Civil Engineering on February 25. Robert (Bob) and Patricia (Pat) Sletten (Sletten Construction) and Jon Peterson (Fluor Government Group) received Program Advocate of the Year awards from the Civil Engineering Department. The Montana Contractors Association (MCA) selected Bradley Talcott as recipient of the Contractor of the Year award. The Associate Contractor of the Year Award went to Greg Miller of Holcim. The Montana Building Industry Association (MBIA) honored John Harding as Builder of the Year and the Associate Builder Award went to Corey Hill '92 Bus.

The Civil Engineering Department hosts the dinner on a two year cycle, working cooperatively with MCA and MBIA to recognize industry and community leadership in the heavy construction and building industries.

Bob Sletten, '56 Arch. Engr. '95 HonDoc Eng. , joined his father's construction company, Sletten Construction, in 1956, and now serves as its Chairman of the Board. The Slettens are members of the MSU Alumni Association and the President's Circle. Bob and Pat Sletten jointly gave $1 million to MSU in 2004 to support the Putting Students First Scholarship Campaign. The Slettens set up four endowed scholarships, two in the College of Engineering . The Sletten-Thomas Family Electrical Engineering Scholarship was set up to honor the memory of Pat's father, Cecil Thomas. The Slettens also established the Sletten Family CE/CET Scholarship, an athletic scholarship, and a general, University Scholar's scholarship. Bob is a current member of the MSU Foundation Board of Directors and has previously served on the College of Engineering 's Advisory Council.

The Sletten Construction Company's history dates back to 1928. It is a Montana Corporation with corporate headquarters in Great Falls , Mont Since that time, the firm has experienced a consistent growth and established additional offices in Phoenix , Ariz. ; Las Vegas , Nev. ; and Boise , Idaho . The combined construction volume of these offices has consistently ranked in the top 400 of the Engineering News Record's annual survey for the past 28 years. The Sletten Company has recruited and hired MSU engineering students for decades.

Bradley Talcott, '79 Const. Eng. Tech., was awarded Constructor of the Year by Montana Contractor's Association (MCA). Talcott has owned and operated James Talcott Construction in Great Falls since 1980. He served as MCA's 2004 president and has been a member of its Health Care and Retirement Trust for several years.

Talcott has also served on numerous community boards: Community Help Line; Great Falls Economic Growth Council; Trustee for the Dufresne Foundation of Great Falls; the Great Falls Symphony Association; Great Falls Public Radio Association; and State of Montana Board of Personnel Appeals.

In 2004, Brad helped direct a Dufresne Foundation of Great Falls endowed scholarship gift to the College of Engineering . The scholarship will support students from Montana high schools who want to study engineering at MSU.

The next dinner will be held postponed until February 2008 because of a major renovation to the MSU Strand Union Building at MSU.
