Materials and Structures Research

M&IE faculty members are making exciting advances in advanced materials and structures. As performance requirements grow ever more demanding, the intimate relation between structures and the materials from which they are made becomes critical. M&IE faculty members work in the advancement of ceramic, composite, polymer, and porous materials. Our faculty members are making advancements in structures at the very large scale, such as ultra-lightweight spacecraft, to the very small scale micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). M&IE faculty members look to nature to seek guidance for advanced structural/material systems, such as enabling self-healing or intelligent multi-functionality, and study natural systems such as biofilms.
