Measurements and Instrumentation Laboratory

The Measurements and Instrumentation Laboratory houses many basic sensors and instrument types to support coursework in the Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Technology programs. Students utilize apparatus ranging from simple digital multi-meters and manometers to computerized data acquisition systems and digitizing oscilloscopes. These devices can be used to monitor all kinds of engineering testing and phenomena. ME and MET laboratory experience prepares students for the subsequent courses, project activity in measurements and instrumentation, and possible measurement applications in their engineering careers.

Sensors and Transducers:

  • Accelerometers of various ranges
  • Pressure Sensors and manometers
  • Flowmeters of various types
  • LVDTs
  • Strain Gages
  • Load cells
  • Thermocouples
  • Thermistors
  • RTDs
  • Ultrasonic transducers of several types
  • Inductive and Stroboscopic speed sensors
  • etc.
Major apparatus:
  • National Instruments Data Acquisition Systems with LabVIEW software:
  • 12 desktop PCs, 3 portable PC's, and 4 handheld PC's  for data acquisition in the building and out in the field. Data acquisition speeds vary from static sampling to 100 kHz rate or higher.
  • Full campus network access via cable and wireless
  • Digitizing Oscilloscopes, including Tektronix 4-channel Digital Phosphor Color Scopes
  • Electronic Counters
  • Signal Generators
  • Spectrum Analyzers
  • Waveform and signal generators
  • Power supplies of all types
  • Digital Multimeters
  • Handheld DMM/Oscilloscopes
  • Printer
