This project entails updating, modernizing and expanding the drop tower utilized in EMAT 252.
The "Dynatup" model impactor used in this application has exceeded it's useful life. This apparatus came to MSU in used condition approximately 15 years ago, and while it still provides for experiments grounded in traceable standards it produces inconsistent results and poor outcomes. Samples are relatively expensive, and setup is time-consuming and finicky. Basically, the device is ill-suited to use as an educational tool i a busy laboratory environment, and needs to be modernized. The goal of this project is creation of an experimental apparatus that will enable large numbers of undergraduate students to gain a hands-on experience of dynamic material properties
