I&ME 442
Facilities and Material Handling Systems Design

I&ME 442 is a three-credit course which covers Industrial Engineering concepts and tools related to facility layout, material handling systems, and facility location. Students learn:

systematic procedures for facilities planning and the corresponding design steps,
how to analyze complex process flows using engineering design tools,
about different types of facility layout problems and how to apply existing approaches to generate alternative solutions,
design and evaluate practical layout alternatives,
the principle of unit load as applied to facility layout design,
material handling systems for different applications, and
popular computer tools related to the above topics.
A significant component of the course is to participate in the CICMHE Design Competition. Over the years, MSU teams have won the national competition!

Students do much of their course work in the Billie O. Ragsdale Production Systems Design Laboratory on the 4th floor of Roberts Hall.
