Research and Development Projects

“Evaluation of the Montana DOT State Truck Activities Reporting (STARS)”

  • With other team members, determined factors to adjust the output from the Measure of Enforcement Activity Reporting System (MEARS) to account for the presence of legally overweight vehicles in the traffic stream. These factors were developed at various sites and times from the overweight vehicle profiles determined by MEARS during enforcement activities. This approach assumes that the vehicles that operate during overt enforcement activities are compliant with weight limits. (2004-05)

“Paratransit Systems Operations Models”

  • Supervised development of models for evaluating routing, scheduling and dispatch alternatives for paratransit system management.  Work resulted in a general database architecture and travel, load and unload time estimation models for scheduling intercity buses.  Other uses of the decision support tools will be bus fleet configuration and operational systems design. (2002-2003)

“CARS – Computer-aided Asphalt Railcar Scheduler” (Cenex)

  • Developed a computerized decision support system linking ARENA simulation and standalone  one-day scheduling models with the corporate database.  The simulation model was designed for facility design and operational parameter evaluation.  The standalone scheduler produced feasible schedules using decision rules (1998-99).

Gathered requirements, scoped the work, and developed mathematical models, database and software designs. Developed and tested prototype software to run on PC, IBM mainframe, and 6000 series RISC systems (1990-91).

"Greater-than-class-C Low Level Radioactive Waste Management Program" (DOE)
