High Altitude Balloon Payload Design Program
(Summer 2011)



                   

Program Overview

    In this project, 6 female engineering students will work as part of an interdisciplinary project team to design a high altitude balloon payload. The payload will carry a radiation sensor that is being developed at MSU as part of a radiation tolerant computing research effort sponsored by NASA. The payload will be designed to adhere to the interface guidelines from the High Altitude Student Platform (HASP) balloon launch program that is jointly administered by the NASA Wallops Balloon Program Office and Louisiana State University for a future flight. At the end of the summer program, the payload will be test flown on a MSGC BOREALIS balloon platform to an altitude of 100,000 feet.

    The payload will be designed and prototyped during an 8-week summer program at MSU-Bozeman during June and July. The female engineering students participating in this program will be exposed to working on an interdisciplinary project team adhering to the principles of systems engineering. Program Flyer

Engineering Design Process

    1. Project Definition & Planning

    Mission Objective: To collect data from a custom radiation sensor in a high altitude environment
     
    Budget: $450

    2. Requirements Definition & Engineering Specifications

    Functional Requirements: - log/store data from a custom radiation sensor while it is flown on a high altitude balloon
    - power the sensor and computer system
    - protect the system from environmental elements during flight
    - protect the system from impact upon landing
    - self monitor power system
     
    Performance Requirements: - log data from sensor to provide sufficient information about the radiation environment
    - provide power for the duration of mission
    - store data on non-volatile memory that can be retrieved regardless of power failure
    - preserve data in the worst cast landing scenario (100k feet free fall, water, fire, animals)
    - be able to log power failures for sufficient analysis
     
    Physical Requirements: - must fit in a 15 cm x 15 cm x 30 cm box.
    - must not exceed 2.72 kg
    - must mechanically and electrically interface to the BOREALIS and HASP system
    - must be able to withstand temperatures from -60 C to 60 C
     
    Reliability Requirements: - must be able to be launched one time
