    blueEnergy’s Service Learning Internship Program

Working for a more equitable, sustainable world

 

 

Interested in becoming a leader for a more equitable, sustainable world? Interested in sustainable energy, clean water, and/or community development?

 

blueEnergy’s Service Learning Internship Program is a unique opportunity to apply classroom and theoretical work knowledge to real-world situations. Have the experience of a lifetime while participating in blueEnergy’s development work on the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua!

 

blueEnergy is a non-profit organization that connects isolated communities to clean water, energy, and other basic services to give people the opportunity to improve their lives. We are currently focused on the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua, where over 75% of the population does not have access to electricity and clean water. Utilizing a community-based project design model, we work directly with our beneficiaries to create appropriate solutions. Intern with blueEnergy and experience this development model hands-on!

 

The Service Learning Internship Program is designed for individuals interested in gaining hands-on implementation experience in at least one of the following program areas: water, energy, and community development. Individual work plans are developed by blueEnergy’s Nicaraguan project managers so that each intern has the opportunity to work on a project and develop skills within his/her area of interest. Interns are also encouraged and provided the necessary support to conduct research on areas of their interest and the interests of blueEnergy’s beneficiaries.

 

Examples of internship opportunities (specific opportunities will depend on current needs in Nicaragua and

each individuals skills):

 

·     Clean Water Initiatives: construction and implementation of water filter and well drilling technologies

·     Solar Latrines: construction, implementation, and public sensitization around technology

·     Improved Cook Stoves: distribution and public sensitization around technology

·     Community Solar Installations

·     Community Education Initiative: develop and oversee educational programs on renewable energy, hygiene and sanitation, and environmental conservation practices

·     Small-scale Wind Turbine Research and Development

blueEnergy’s Service Learning Internship Program is an eye-opening, real-world experience that aims to empower young people to take a leadership role in their home communities and in international development. It will set you apart from your peers and provide the necessary skills to accomplish your academic and career goals. You will gain leadership skills, learn how to work effectively in culturally diverse groups, and expand your knowledge of project development.

 

Potential highlights of blueEnergy’s Service Learning Internship Program:

 

·     A close-up look at international community development;

·     Hands-on experience in renewable energy implementation;

·     Hands-on experience in clean water, health, and sanitation initiatives;

·     Research opportunities;

·     Language immersion, and/or

·     Exposure to the rich culture and history of Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast.

 

Programs run from 1-12 weeks, with flexible start dates. Fees are $1,600 for a 1-week program, with $600 each additional week. This fee pays for a high quality experience and covers room, board, internet, laundry, emergency medical insurance, and project-based travel. In addition, a portion of your program fee supports the local projects you’ll be working on. International airfare and domestic airfare are not covered and are the responsibility of the intern.

 

Note:

·     Program fees are 100% tax-deductible for US residents.

·     Past interns have successfully secured foundation or university funding (e.g. research or travel grants) to cover fees. We encourage people who are interested to seek out these academic funding options.

·     Past interns have successfully fundraised their program fees through personal outreach to friends and family. blueEnergy can provide materials and support in personal fundraising campaigns.

·     Discounts can be provided for the low season (October-February and May).

 

Graduate school admissions officers and employers look favorably upon individuals who have international experience and have worked in collaborative, multi-cultural environments.

Environmental Engineer-BOI28927

Job Description

As an Environmental Engineer at Micron Technology, Inc., you will provide engineering and regulatory compliance determinations for design projects and process changes associated with semiconductor manufacturing, R&D, and site support operations.  Additional duties include preparation, review, and filing of regulatory reports and permit applications.  You will also work closely with facilities design engineers, site operations, maintenance teams, process engineers, and the legal department to maintain a cohesive approach to compliance. In this role, you will provide technical and regulatory input and recommendations for projects and process changes. You will prepare technical reports and provide engineering support to ensure facility compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.



Qualifications

  • A background in environmental compliance, either through experience or education.
  • Excellent computer skills, with a proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent customer-service skills.
  • The ability to be well organized and prioritize workload.
  • The ability to work on multiple tasks concurrently.
  • The ability to work well on a team.
  • A high level of self-motivation.
  • Experience with Industrial Wastewater Treatment, Pollution Abatement, and Specialty Gas and Chemical Systems (preferred).
  • Experience with Waste and Stormwater Collection, and the related Management Systems (preferred).

Education:

  • A minimum of a B.S. in Chemical or Environmental Engineering or related discipline.
  • M.S. (preferred).

·         Previous experience with work on the North Slope of Alaska  or other arctic regions

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

·         PE License

·         Previous experience supervising groups of process engineers with an emphasis on FEED and detailed engineering projects.

·         Experience with oil and gas gathering including flowline gathering system simulation with analysis of well productivity and reservoir decline
