GRADUATE PROGRAMS

Expand Your Education

Graduate education is an opportunity to specialize in your field of interest and explore topics in depth. As an undergraduate, you develop broad-based technical expertise with an emphasis on engineering science and design. As a graduate student, you will expand your knowledge and understanding of your chosen field tremendously. This rewarding experience required dedication, independent thought, and technical integrity; and gives you the chance to expand your horizons.

The Department of Civil Engineering provides a comprehensive graduate program offering M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering, and a Master of Construction Engineering Management degree. At the doctorate level the College of Engineering grants a Ph.D. degree in Engineering with specialization in either applied mechanics or environmental engineering. the department has approximately 25 faculty members supporting specialized study in engineering mechanics, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, environmental engineering, water resources engineering, and construction management.

  Research

A variety of interesting research is performed, often involving laboratory and field studies in conjunction with computational analysis. A sampling of current research includes: snow and ice mechanics; geosynthetic applications for roadways; seismic capacity of bridge foundations; the use of non-conventional concrete mixtures as structural materials; intelligent transportation systems; recycled pavements; reconstructed wetlands; and the effects of wastewater applications on soil physics. Research in the areas of industrial water and wastewater systems, drinking water, bioremediation and microbial fouling control is performed by faculty with joint appointments to MSU's Center for Biofilm Engineering (CBE) and Civil Engineering Department.

   Join Us!

Professors who have a wealth of experience, who are committed to your advancement, and who are willing to take the extra steps to make sure you get a quality education will surround you. You'll also be surrounded by a great group of fellow students with diverse interests. Finally, you'll be attending one of the most beautiful campus settings in the country. If the challenge of expanding your education and doing research in your chosen field interests you, we're anxious to have you join us.

  CENTERS

In 1990, the Center for Biofilm Engineering (CBE) was established as an Engineering Research Center by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Today the center promotes interdisciplinary research with teams of faculty, graduate students, and researchers from the departments of Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mathematics, and Microbiology. The research efforts of these cross-disciplinary teams have provided educational opportunities that are unique in graduate education. The success of the CBE has centered heavily on graduate student contributions combined with strong mentorship from faculty. The Center for Biofilm Engineering provides infrastructure and an established mission for students seeking graduate education in environmental engineering.

The Western Transportation Institute (WTI) was established in 1994 by the Montana and California Departments of Transportation. WTI supports academic research activities in transportation engineering. These areas include intelligent transportation systems, recycled pavements, and rural transportation issues.
