Academic Year 2010-2011 News

October 2010-- Prior to MSU’s Fall Career Fair, MSU-ITE held a social on October 13, 2010 at Colombo’s Pizza. The chapter invited professionals from companies recruiting at the next day’s fair. Employees from Sanderson Stewart (Bozeman, MT), WWC (Helena, MT), and MDT attended the event. Dr. McGowen talked about transportation graduate school opportunities as well as the fellowships with WTI. This was a great opportunity for the students to talk with the transportation professionals about their various fields of work and the opportunities they have for internships and entry-level jobs. This social is in its third year for the MSU-ITE student chapter and they hope to continue to expand the number of companies that attend in years to come.

November 2010-- The current Western-ITE Vice-President, Alyssa Reynolds, visited Montana State University and gave a technical presentation to the MSU-ITE student chapter. Alyssa works for the City of Henderson in Nevada and presented on the challenges and successes of the Racetrack Rd. crosswalk. The students learned a great deal about the rather obscure field of crosswalk design as well as the interaction that occurs with the public as they voice their concerns during a public project.

November 2010-- The GIS manager for the City of Bozeman, MT, John Henderson spoke to MSU-ITE regarding the implementation of GIS within the city of Bozeman. GIS has had a far reaching impact on the future development and current city of Bozeman planning. John highlighted the specific ways that GIS has helped to organize the commercial and residential districts of the city and promote future growth of each to fit into the city’s current infrastructure system.

November 2010-- The recruiter for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in Helena, MT, Lloyd Rue came and presented to MSU-ITE about career opportunities with the FHWA and relevant projects that the FHWA in Montana is currently working on.

February 2011--The Engineer-A-Thon was held in the Shroyer Gym from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This event involved bringing in sixth graders from a local middle school and showing them topics related to engineering. The MSU-ITE chapter ran their crash test ramp which teaches students about transportation safety as they attempted to protect their eggs from 'bodily harm.' Several members from the chapter ran the booth and the young students enjoyed the challenge immensely.

April 2011-- MDT sponsors an Adopt-a-Highway program. The student chapter has adopted a two-mile section (RP 64 to RP 66) on US 191 (connecting Bozeman to Yellowstone National Park) through MDT’s Adopt-A-Highway Program. The chapter has committed to picking up roadside litter in the spring and the fall. MSU-ITE cleaned the highway in April 2011 to ensure the highway is clean for the summer tourist season.

April 2011-- Former Vice-President of MSU-ITE and current Traffic Engineer at Sanderson Stewart, Joey Staszcuk, came and presented to MSU-ITE on what it is like working in the real world, the projects he is involved with, and how he is involved with ITE as an upcoming professional.

May 2011-- MSU-ITE applied for and received a data collection fund award from Western ITE for a proposal to collect data at the Bridger Bowl Ski Area, located in Bridger Canyon near Bozeman, MT. Bridger Bowl represents a typical ski area that can be studied for the trip generation manuals. The club organized all the data collections to be completed during the peak ski season at the end of January 2011 and the beginning of February 2011, and submitted the findings to WTI on May 16th, 2011.
