Proficient technical writing is very important for engineering graduates to develop in order to be competitive in the workforce. This Toolkit was developed to help YOU become a better technical writer!

Tips for Technical Writing

When beginning a writing assignment it is important to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of technical writing?
  • Who is your audience?
  • What is the occasion for the writing?
  • What is your technical writing process?

Next the structure and format of the paper should be understood. This can help with brainstorming ideas and developing the first draft. Both structure and format are usually specified by the professor or assignment.
